Collie’s kerbside waste collection service is set to get more environmentally friendly with the implementation of an organics recycling service.
New organics bins will allow residents to separate their waste into organic recycling, non-organic recycling and general waste in a bid to reduce the amount of waste going to the town’s landfill site, extending its useful life, a well as reducing carbon emissions.
New bins are being distributed to about 4000 homes in Collie ahead of the weekly organics recycling collection service starting 4 April 2016. Each household will also receive a starter pack of compostable bags for use in the new bins.
A letter, collection calendar and helpful information on the correct use of the new bins will be sent to residents in the coming weeks, helping to avoid contamination of the compost being produced from organic waste.
Local business TBS Rural and Hardware was awarded the contract for the supply, assembly and distribution of the organics bins.
“The Shire of Collie is committed to using local suppliers and services and it is pleasing to award the contract to a local company,” Shire president Wayne Sanford said.
Shire of Collie chief executive officer David Blurton said the program would save ratepayers money in the long term.
“In considering introducing the organics bin service, the Council gave regard to current and future waste management needs and community feedback from consultation undertaken,” he said.
“Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill by diverting organics will assist the Shire and its ratepayers achieve long term financial and environmental benefits.
“The Shire has received a significant grant from the Waste Authority as part of the Better Bins funding program to assist in introducing this service to the community.
“The funding received from the Waste Authority has assisted in making this initiative possible for the Shire of Collie,” said Mr Blurton.
A slight delay to the rollout of the organics service has resulted in savings that will be passed on to ratepayers by reducing the amount required to be levied for the organics service in the coming years.
